Pitbull Adoption

Pitbull or Victim? Pit Bulls are the most preferred dog in America, in spite of the bad press they've been receiving lately due to the aggressive nature of some of their clan. Pit Bulls are dogs that know and understand love. So, if you can provide affection to your pet, then a Pit Bull can make a fine companion.

Pit Bulls can be purchased from breeders as well as rescue shelters. It is infinitely better to adopt a rescue dog. Dogs in rescue shelters are taken from the streets where they've been abandoned by heartless owners, or from people who have become too occupied to care for their dogs.

There are Pit Bulls who are being put to sleep just because some of their species have been involved in violent incidents. Rescue shelters also save dogs from such euthanasia and house them until some affectionate owner adopts them.

There are several missions that provide rescue dogs for adoption. They operate mostly via the Internet. Some of the prominent ones are Pit Bull Rescue Central, Bay Area Dog-lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls (BADRAP), Pit Bull Project, etc. These organizations advertise their Pit Bulls online along with whaPitbulltever information they might have of their past histories and their traits. These Pit Bulls are spayed or neutered, either by the organizations themselves or by the people who turn them in to these rescue shelters. People adopting Pit Bulls from such shelters pay less than they would at a breeder's. An adult Pit Bull may be adopted for as less as $150, with papers.

It is much be! tter to adopt an adult Pit Bull than a puppy. Though puppies may be cute to look at, they are very temperamental. They may not respond to training. Puppies are also instinctively destructive and may be difficult when their teething period sets in. any they may be dangerous around children. On the other hand, adult Pit Bulls that are adopted have tendencies to be more docile and responsive to training. It is important to remember while adopting a Pit Bull that it is the behavior of the Pit Bull that matters, not its looks. You should adopt a Pit Bull that may be suitable to your lifestyle. There are Pit Bulls that are laidback or aggressive, outgoing or homebound, etc.

Pit Bulls can also be adopted from their owners directly without the intervention of rescue shelters. However this is risky, as the owners may hide some features of their pet and exaggerate some others. Whether you opt for adopting a Pit Bull from a rescue shelter or an owner, it is necessary to ask for the requisite papers.

Finally, adopting a Pit Bull is a service to their community. It is like saving a life. Adopted Pit Bulls are much more loyal and they would look upon you as their hero who rescued them from the clutches of death.

Some Terrier Dogs That You Would Find Interesting

Hungary postage stamp: Puli dog The personality of a lively child put into dog- this might be a good way of describing the general personality of terriers. But as it appears, that still would not justify their temperaments.

These dogs came from the British Isles where they were first oriented to hunting fox, rat, otter and the likes over and under the ground. And as its name suggests, "terrier" came from the word "terra" which means, "earth".

While terriers may be identified through their prominent physical characteristics, they are still divided into various breeds that separate one kind from another.

The following are the subgroups of the terrier breed:

Show Terriers- These are basically bred as small dogs and are used for show rings.

Bull and Terrier Types- these came from breeding between bull dogs and terriers. Only in the last quarter of 1800's did the breeders separate a number of bull dogs from terrier types for distinction.

Hunting and Working Terriers- The breed that was primarily bred for hunting. Cavalier King Charles - Dallas Dog Shows

Toy Terriers- These are the smaller versions of terriers, which are basically categorized into the companion breed.

To help you understand the various natures of terrier dogs, we have prepared some dog profiles here, please read on.

Airedale Terrier- This is known to be the largest dog in the Terrier breed. Standing an average of 23 inches from the shoulder, this dog shows off both beauty and elegance t! hat make them fit for both dog obedience trials and show rings.

A cross-breed between Otterhound and Black and Tan Terrier, Airedale possess good skill in scent and superb swimming prowess.

Australian Terrier- Probably one of the dog types that have gotten to so many out-crossings with other dog breeds. A cross breed between the forerunner of Dandie Dinmont and rough coated terrier is said to have been migrated into England. The offspring of which was taken to Australia. With the scarcity of dog breeds in this land, many dogs had been crossbred into it which later resulted to a small type having the characteristics of terriers while being a good watchdog and ratter. It stands 10 to 11 inches with a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Border Terrier- A True-blue working terrier, this dog is marked by its medium built while proving to work far better than what its appearance may give. Border Terriers are agile and alert while having the capacity to fit into narrow gaps especially during hunting.

Aside from its being affectionate and good adaptation to training, Border terriers can also make good family pets.

Bull Terrier- Originally bred for dog fighting and bull baiting, this dog is known to have been well-accustomed to courage and good resistance to pain. However, when the bloody dog fights were banned in England during the 1800's, most breeders turned to breeding milder dogs.

Bull Terriers came from these fighting dogs combined with Dalmatian and English Terrier to produce all-white specie. This new breed though is very much reserved from starting fights which gave them the nickname "White Cavalier".

There are of course a variety of other terrier species. Initially, you might find them interesting enough to catch your attention but a closer look would lead you to further knowing them. Who knows, you might find your ideal type of dog in this breed.

Before You Bring Your New Pit Bull Puppy Home: Dog Owner Advice

There are several things one should consider before adding a Pit Bull terrier to your household. As with any and all breeds of dogs, Pit Bulls have their own individual quirks and personalities that should be researched and considered thoroughly before adding a Pit Bull puppy to your family. You also will need to make sure that you have time for a puppy in your life, as they crave lots of love and attention, and don't do as well in busy families where they aren't able to get that. You definitely do not want to add a new pet if it isn't going to fit in with your family or other pets you may already have. Pit Bull terriers usually do better in homes with older children, than those with babies or toddlers.

Once you have made the decision that a Pit Bull puppy would be a good addition to your household, you will need to ready your house for him before you bring the puppy home. Preparing your home beforehand will make your first few days at home with your new puppy much easier. Puppies are naturally curious about their surroundings, so you definitely should take precaution with household products, plants, poisons, etc. Puppies also tend to be destructive sometimes, so you will also need to consider that as well. They like to chew a lot, so you will want to purchase toys for them to have, and keep anything you don't want damaged out of the puppy's area.

When you bring your new puppy home, you should ensure that there will be someone at home most of the time. The puppy should be taken outside often, at least until he is house-broken. It is also important that your puppy get a lot of exercise, which will help in getting rid of any pent up energy he may have, making the puppy easier to deal with.

It is very important to try to have a routine for your new puppy, as puppies tend to do better when things are kept consistent. Many puppies don't respond well to change, so it is important to establish a routine and keep it up.

Owning a Pit Bull terrier comes with a lot of responsibility, as with owning any ! pet. Pit Bulls thrive in homes with loving and attentive owners. They are very loving and devoted when cared for and treated well.

Dog Training Part V: The Command Voice

Pet Love When giving commands to a dog, a calm, firm, authoritative voice is most effective. Dogs do not respond well to hesitant, pleading voices, nor to yelling, which might sound to the dog like threatening barking or scolding. It is also important that the word used for the command and the pitch of the voice be consistent each time the command is delivered so that the dog can more easily learn what the owner means (siiiiiiiiiiiit does not sound the same as sit, for example).

Using the puppy's name before a command ensures that the dog knows that a command is coming, that it is for him (rather than for other dogs, children, or people), and that he should pay attention. This is important because dogs hear a lot of human speech that has no relevance for them at all, and it is easy for them to disregard commands amongst the babble.

ToIts freezing out! Make sure to keep your pets warm. reinforce the command, the dog always gets some kind of reward or reinforcement (praise and usually a treat or toy) when it performs the action correctly. This helps the dog to understand that he has done a good thing.

Note that not all dogs are trained to voice command. Many working breeds of dog are not trained to a voice command at all; they are taught to obey a combination of whistles and hand signals. Deaf dogs are perfectly capable of learning to obey visual signals alone. Many obedience classes teach hand signals for common commands in addition to voice signals; these signals can be useful in quiet situations, at a distance, and in advanced obedience competitions.

The specific command words are not important, although common words in English include sit, down, come, and stay. Short, clear words that are easily understood by other humans are generally rec! ommended; that way, people will understand what a handler is telling his dog to do and other handlers have a good chance of controlling someone else's dog if necessary. In fact, dogs can learn commands in any language or other communications medium, including whistles, mouth sounds, hand gestures, and so forth.
